Passionate about comics and illustration since he was a child, he starts to work profes-sionally- as a freelance designer and illustrator - as early as 1989, developing during the years a very personal style, yet influenced by pop-art, psychedelic late-60s graphics and by artists like Guido Crepax, Guy Peellaert, Nicholas Devil, and the american illustrators Bob Peak e Peter Max. Specializing later in pin-up illustration, he moves to London in 1998, where - influenced by the local Mod/60s Scene - completes his graphic style with loads of sophisticated details. He goes back to his homeland in 2003 and starts to produce new material. With his wife, Kristina, opens Ultrapop Publishing in september 2005, producing high-quality, limited edition books and pop-psychedelic posters.

Bubblegum & Sunshine Pop

Magic sweets

By Jean-Emmanuel Deluxe
Illustrated by Bart Johnson
Foreword by Bertrand Burgalat

Bubblegum and sunshine pop ? What on earth are such oddities ?
Some pop music, true, and at its best for sure, but what else ? On
the bubblegum side, one gets catchy tunes and sound candy, naive
and joyful lyrics : let´s just mention, to name a few, Lio´s
Banana Split, Yummy Yummy Yummy by the Ohio Express or Britney´s
Toxic. On the sunshine pop side, one is bathed with elegiac vocal
harmonies, smooth arrangements mingled with rock´n´roll brisk
rhythms : see for instance the Beach Boys´ Barbara Ann or Del
Shannon´s Runaway. Actually, it seems that you have already been
indulging in bubblegum and sunshine pop, without even noticing it !
These two genres, which quite often converge although they are
truly distinct ones, go "snap, crackle and pops" in the
listener´s brain, a real treat for auditory canals ! And in these
sullen times, here´s a good way to cheer up, folks !
The history of contemporary amplified music (as civil servants
would name it) owes indeed far more than one may think to such
seemingly "light-hearted" genres : that´s why the latter
needed reevaluation, as they are much too often unrecognized.
Let´s have a dream, then : you are on an endless summer beach,
where, as the sun´s orange rays beat down, you are busy roasting
marshmallows; You are still in the grip of a Banana Split-like
flash caused by one of these ecstatic concerts given by the Flaming
Lips; You are daydreaming about the Hawaii promised by Sean O´
Hagan´s High Llamas´ record covers ... open your eyes now and
don´t lose any moment; settle in your most comfortable armchair,
sipping your favourite soda : this book is going to guide you
through to unbeknownst magic countries ! Heaven was at hand, and
you didn´t know it ...

JED is a journalist, performer and pop culture activist. He writes

as well as for Nude Magazine (England) and Roctober (USA). He´s
both a producer and the Managing Director of French multimedia
label Martyrs of Pop (music, cinema, etc), and is as we now speak
involved in the making of records with artists such as Sean O´
Hagan.

A rock&roll dictionnary from France

www.myspace.com/martyrsofpop

Thi is the subjective dictionary of pop spirit and aesthetics at the cinema, featuring rock films with iconic figures such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, the Sex Pistols or Led Zep, but also some paths through fields of surprises and true discoveries ( the Spotnicks, Toomorrow, Slade, The Phinx). With sheer humour and fancy, the book acts as a real panorama, from Danger Diabolik to Les Coeurs Verts (a true rarity featuring a Serge Gainsbourg-penned soundtrack),from the cinéma d´auteur to exploitation movies stuffed with sub-culture, having been breast-fed to flashy colours and sexy "vroom vrooms", rhythmic shindigs and lysergic transports. Mods, punks, romantics, hippy vampires, pop art femmes fatales, Teddy boys and
phoney spies, they all mingle in a zany pop stampede; beach movies, biker movies, deviant satanist movies, bubblegum movies with leftists out of a Hannah & Barbera cartoon, psychedelic weirdness directly imported from Swinging London : blimey, what a tremendous fun you get when reading such book !

THE BOOK

Appearing as a learned dictionary being attractive for newcomers as well as bursting with discoveries even for movie buffs and music lovers, the book does not claim to be exhaustive, but aims at leading readers to go and see (or see once again) a whole piece of sometimes misunderstood cinema genres. It should be read whilst listening to good film soundtracks.

KEY IDEAS

Very well-documented, scholarly, funny, well-illustrated and original. A kind of pop spirit exhales from every page. The book
entices you to go and practice jerk dancing with Barbarella on Planet Moog. The foreword by Christophe Lemaire, king of loony popular cinema, gives even bigger credit to the whole.

THE AUTHOR

Jean-Emmanuel Deluxe is a specialist in pop culture who has collaborated with and written for : Standard, Keyboard, Clark,
Playboy, Crash, Gonzaï, Roctober, Misty Lane, The Idler, Nude Magazine. Mr Deluxe contributed to books such as Les Destins Brisés du Rock by Bruno de Stabenrath (Scali) or the Dictionnaire des Images (Nouveau Monde), has written for Alex Jaffrey (Telematin music chronicles on France 2 TV channel). His name can also be found, next to April March´s, in the credits to Quentin Tarantino´s recent Deathproof ! Founder of Eurovisions music label (featuring works by April March, The Witch Hazel Sound, Pete Aves, which he all introduced to French audiences), this self-declared provincial dandy is busy preparing a follow-up to his Tribute to Alain Delon & Jean-Pierre Melville album, co-written and produced with Alexander Faem, which featured Jacno, Saint Etienne or Helena Noguerra. The new album will be promisingly entitled Hollywood 1, Rouen 1 (his hometown), and will benefit from the talents of Sean O´ Hagan, Faust, Dondolo, April March, Bertrand Burgalat, Misawa Masanori, Nicolas Vernhes, Canned Ham, Hélène Pince (what a cast of characters !). Monsieur Deluxe now presides to the destiny of Martyrs of Pop, a label which is specialising in "pop chic", releasing vinyls, CDs or DVDs (the last with the help of Chalet Films). Mr Deluxe has also published a book on bubblegum and sunshine pop and worked as a radio and TV host. He is a full-time entertainer for the numeric age with a taste for the analogic.

A band from Spain

ROCKET MONAS
